Laws of Motion –
Project 1
<>Miniature Golf
Hole Using
Marbles
In our current
Science unit,
called, “Fun In Motion,” we will be discovering the Laws of Motion that
govern
the movement of all things in the known universe. According
to Sir Issac Newton:
First Law of
Motion: Objects
resting tend to stay at rest. Objects
moving tend to continue moving (unless acted on by outside force.)
Second Law of
Motion: Outside
forces can change the motion of objects.
(Force = Mass x Acceleration)
<>Third Law of
Motion: For
every
action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
A bit closer to
home, this
project involves the designing and building of one miniature golf hole
that
will require the use of a marble, and that will allow us to experience
some of
the Laws of Motion first-hand (and improve our golf handicap as well! HA!).
Each golf hole
should
include:
A “tee box” where
the golf
ball (marble) will rest.
A “fairway”
containing at
least 2 different types of surfaces (like Astroturf, carpet, sand,
sandpaper,
water, cardboard, small rocks.)
A wall to cause at
least one
ricochet (no straight shots tee to hole!)
A small hill or
valley on the
fairway.
A hole that the
marble will
fit in (flag optional).
The golf hole
should be mostly
green in color.
<>The golf hole
should have a
name sign like, “The Dogleg” or “Easy Street” or “Hazard Hollow.”
Optional: Trees, rocks,
birds, deer, moose and other things to give the feeling of a real fake
golf
hole! Every student will try it.Due:

<>Within Your Heart –
By Louise Driscoll
Within
your heart,
Keep one still, secret
spot,
Where dreams may go,
May thrive and grow,
Where doubt and fear
are not.
Oh, keep a place apart,
Within your heart,
For little dreams to go.
Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening by
Robert Frost
Whose
woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
'Twas the Night Before Christmas
or Account of a
Visit from St. Nicholas
by
Clement C. Moore
|
'Twas
the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
|
|
And
then, in a
twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his
teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round
belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby
and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!"
