Amateur Radio Station

WA9UKW

Boise Ada County, Idaho Grid: DN13up

WA9UKW licensed June 27, 1967, as a Technician Class License. 2 Meters was the primary operating band for this station. Operations were carried out on AM with a Heathkit transceiver, followed by an Ameco TX-62, 75 Watt, 6 and 2 meter transmitter, Hallicrafters SX-99 receiver and home brewed converters for 6 and 2 meter reception. The antenna was a rotated Hy-Gain DB-62 beam antenna on a 40' tower. There were excursions into RTTY with home brewed TNC's and later Packet Radio with a Heathkit Packet interface and Apple IIe computer. In the '70's FM repeater operation became a popular operating mode, which was first tried with a converted Motorola FM transceiver that didn't work very well. This was followed by a Regency HR-2B crystal controlled transceiver that saw many years of service, both mobile and fixed.

April 15, 2000 Technician License was upgraded to General Class license. Presently, WA9UKW operates primarily on 20 meters with a Yaesu FT-840 Transceiver running 100 watts SSB into a LDG AT-11MP Autotuner and a Butternut HF9V antenna. The antenna is ground mounted with an array of 200' of copper wire buried for a ground plane. Other operations are carried out with a Yaesu FT-50R handheld 2 meter/70 Cm transceiver. Also operating the Yaesu FT-840 running 20 watts in PSK31 mode. VHF/UHF Kenwood TM-G707E into a Cushcraft AR-270B antenna 10' above ground level.
