WHAT IS RADIO CONTROL? Radio Control (RC) modeling is a hobby enjoyed worldwide by people of all ages. There are hundreds of different models... airplanes, boats, cars, helicopters, and more... that can be driven or flown remotely by using a simple wireless AM or FM radio transmitter/receiver system. Whether you're interested in a huge 1/4 scale vintage WWI fighter plane, or a sleek 1/12 scale on-road Ferrari, there's a type and scale of RC model for you. HOW MUCH MONEY AND TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW IS REQUIRED? Less than you probably think, especially compared to starting other activities such as golf or fishing! The hobby in general has never been so easy and affordable. Many manufacturers offer inexpensive, simple-to-operate starter models that you can upgrade as your skills and budget allow. Unlike remote-controlled "toys", RC models can achieve remarkable levels of sophistication and performance. Imagine driving a model car that reaches 50+ mph... or flying a model plane that executes the same daring maneuvers flown by stunt pilots at full-scale air shows! And you don't even have to build a model to participate. Many come partially or completely factory-assembled. Then again, you might choose to build a model kit project for a rewarding sense of accomplishment... one that parents and kids can experience together. DO I NEED A LICENSE? No. the radio transmitters used in radio control are under 1 watt of output, so no licenses are required for normal hobby operation. However, in order to fly RC aircraft, one must obtain their "AMA" membership. Many modelers refer to this as their "AMA License". In essence you join the nationwide club of RC aircraft enthusiasts and in return, you receive a monthly magazine covering everything new about RC aircraft modeling and up to $2,500,000 worth of liability insurance. (Imagine "accidentally" flying your airplane into your friends brand new car at 80 MPH!) For more information on AMA, go here. Many clubs allows new pilots to fly on the "buddy box" system until they obtain their AMA membership. WHERE DO I GET SUPPLIES AND SUPPORT? There are over 3500 hobby shops nationwide that carry radio control cars, airplanes, and boats. You can purchase RC models and accessories and get immediate, hands-on advice and guidance from experienced hobby shop personnel. There are also dozens of websites that offer information and product support. Hobby magazines are yet another great resource, with titles specializing in many different areas of RC modeling. See "Texhoma Hobbies" on this website for our area's local hobby shop. Also see "links" on this website for online hobby shopping. ARE THERE RC CLUBS OR ORGANIZATIONS I CAN JOIN? Yes! One of the most rewarding aspects of RC modeling is the social interaction with other hobbyists. Many people especially enjoy the thrill of competition and gain valuable life-long mechanical and physical skills in building and maintaining their models. Participation in local clubs or regional and national organizations also helps develop social skills, good sportsmanship and a sense of responsibility. It makes RC modeling the ideal hobby for young people, and one they'll never outgrow. WHAT'S THE QUICKEST, EASIEST WAY TO GET STARTED IN RC? If you hear the word "model" and picture a box filled with small parts, you haven't seen a "Ready-to-Run" (RTR) model. Some RTR cars, trucks and boats come so complete, you just add fuel or a battery and you're ready to race. "Ready-to-Fly" (RTF) planes are also available that take as little as 20 minutes to make flight-ready! For first-time hobbyists, RTRs offer many advantages in addition to saving time. For example, you know your model has been assembled correctly. It looks like something a skilled hobbyists put together... you'll be proud to show it off. And key accessories, like the engine and radio, are usually already included... so you have almost everything you need, in the right sizes and styles, with just one simple purchase. you can expect to buy a few small additional items when you choose an RTR, such as fuel, or batteries. But you won't need a well-equipped workshop, special building tools, or mechanical know-how... just the urge to get out and have a great time!
