Chess team outmaneuvers
national opponents
4/23/2004
Chanute High School students returned from
Dallas today wearing their trophies from the national chess
tournament.
Six CHS chess team competed Friday through Sunday at the
national competition sponsored by the United States Chess
Federation. The Comets finished second in the 4A division in
Kansas' state tournament, behind Columbus, to qualify for
the national tournament.
For several team members it was their first USCF tournament
since the 2001 national tournament in Kansas City, so the
ratings that defined individual abilities were outdated.
Competing against 244 others in the under
900 rated division were seniors Shane Newell, Brittany
Schroeder and Chanelle Bradford. Juniors Sarah Kubler and
Nick Adams and sophomore John Yowam competed against 222
others in the unrated division.
Capturing individual trophies for five wins
out of seven rounds of play were Shane Newell (T-22nd) and
John Yowam (35th). The team of Schroeder, Bradford and
Newell finished 22nd and earned a team trophy.
