Composition: "The
Necklace"
The story "The Necklace"
was about a married couple that lived in France. The story starts out with the
husband who had worked hard to get an invitation to a ball. He wanted to do
this to make his wife happy. His wife Madame Mathilde Loisel got very upset and
started crying because she doesn't have anything to wear to the ball. Her
husband then offered to give his wife 400 francs so that she could buy a new
dress. He had been saving this money for himself so that he could buy a rifle. After
Madame Loisel gets her new dress she then complained that she would look dowdy because
she didn't have any nice jewelry to wear with the dress. Her husband then
suggested that she borrow some jewelry from her friend. Madame Loisel was
pleased with that idea. She then borrowed a necklace from a friend of hers.
Madame Loisel and her husband went
to the ball and everyone complemented her on how she looked. Sometime either
during the ball or on their way home Madame Loisel lost the necklace. Mathilde was
very upset; she was crushed, lifeless and blank. Her husband went and looked every
ware for the necklace but was unable to find it.
When Mathilde's husband was unable
to find the necklace he took it upon himself to use his inheritance and borrow
money from several friends and he bought a new necklace. He gave the necklace
to his wife and she returned it to her friend. In the last paragraph of the story
we find out that the original necklace was a fake. Mathilde's husband had replaced it with a real one costing a lot
more that the original one.
I
think Madame Loisel did not care much for her husband. I feel this way because
she is always complaining about things. In the story "The Necklace"
her husband brought home an invitation for her to go to a ball from the
minister of education and Madame Georges Ramponneau. Madame Loisel's response
was to get very upset at her husband. She complained to him that she did not have
a thing to wear to the ball. Her husband finally gave her enough money to buy a
nice dress and then she complained about not having any jewelry to wear with
the dress. Madame Losiel felt that she deserved more out of life. She felt that
she should have been born into a wealthy family and she thought that she
deserved all the things that go with being a rich person. She was not happy
with her life; she only values money and wealth. Madame Loisel seems to be very
materialistic.
Madame Loisel's husband treats her very well. He is a poor man that works hard to provide the best living that he can for himself and his wife. He does that best that he can under the circumstances. He realized that his wife was unhappy because she was not able to go out much. One thing that he did to try to make his wife happy was to get an invitation to a ball. He went through a lot of trouble to get it. Everyone at his office wanted one and they were in great demand. There were only a few reserved for the employees. When he finally got the invitation and brought it home and presented it to his wife she complained and was upset. She complained that she had nothing to wear to the ball. When he heard his wife complain that she did not have a nice dress to wear to the ball he gave her his money that he had been saving for himself so that she could but a new dress. When she lost the necklace he spent that entire night looking for it for her. When he was unable to find it he borrowed 18,000 francs from friends and used his inheritance in order to buy a new necklace. This shows that he cares about her and unlike his wife he values other things besides material objects.
