By
John Vornholt
John
Vornholt was born in 1951 and is still living. John started submitting science
fiction stories to magazines when he was about thirteen years old. At the age
of twenty, he began to write and sell travel articles. Early in his career,
John tried playwriting, which resulted in six published plays and several
productions in the Los Angeles area. He enjoyed the playwriting but was not
able to make a lot of money at it. He then tried screenwriting in the 1980s but
didn't enjoy it very much. John finally realized the he liked writing books
better than anything he has done and he continues to write books to this day.
John currently lives with his wife and two children in Tucson, Arizona.
John Vornholt has written over sixty books in his career. Some of then are, Star Trek The Next Generation - The Genesis Wave: books one, two and three, Star Trek The Next Generation #58 - Gemworld: Book One, Star Trek The Next Generation #59 - Gemworld: Book Two, Star Trek The Next Generation #4 - Double Helix: Quarantine, Star Trek The Next Generation - The Dominion War Book Three: Tunnel Through the Stars, Spider-Man: Valley of the Lizard, Primal Rage: The Avatars, Star Trek: First Contact, The Fabulist, and there are many others.
Some
important characters in Star Trek: First Contact are Captain Jean-Luc
Picard, Data, Commander Will Riker, Deanna Troi, Doctor
Beverly Crusher, and Geordy LaForge.
The
book Star Trek: First Contact starts out with Captain Picard of the star
ship Enterprise having a dream about the Borg. The Borg is a collective of
hundreds of trillions of different aliens that have been turned into cybernetic
robotic things.
Captain
Picards dream was about him being a Borg again. Captain Picard is woken up by a message from Admiral Hayes. The
captain learns that The Borg are on a direct course for Earth. Picard is commanded
to stay away from The Borg and told that he is supposed to guard the neutral
the "Neutral Zone". When he finds out that The Borg have broken
through the defense he headed towards Earth immediately to put a stop to the
terror and destruction that The Borg were causing. When Picard arrives at Earth
he attacked The Borg but was unsuccessful.
The
Borg went into a vortex that took them to the past and then they took over the
Earth. The Starship Enterprise followed The Borg to the past to see if they
could put a stop to the Borg. The Enterprise went even further into the past to
see if the could stop The Borg before The Borg arrived.
The
Borg sent a group to the Enterprise and took over more than half of the ship.
They killed and assimilated many of the crewmembers. Later in the story after a
lot of fighting the crew of the Enterprise destroyed all of The Borg of their
ship. The Borg retreated after that leaving Earth unharmed and safe again.
Star
Trek: First Contact is a science fiction book. I chose this
book because I chose this book because I wanted to read something that was
different from the books that I usually read. I usually read historical
non-fiction books. The only thing that I really liked about this book was that
it had a lot of action. The thing that I disliked about most about this book
was that it was very unrealistic. I would not recommend this book to others
because it is too unrealistic. The book had people talking with aliens that
lived on other planets, it never explained where they got their food from in
fact it never mentioned that the people even ate or went to the bathroom. All
of these things don't make any sense.
Captain
Picard, the main character in this book changed from how he was at the
beginning of the book because he finally got over his fear of the Borg and he
stopped doing what he originally thought was the right thing and did what he
was supposed to do. Captain Picard learned that first assumptions are not
always correct.
The
ending of this book is appropriate because the Borg are destroyed and Captain
Picard got his ship back and saved Earth. I didn't think the ending was very believable
because I can't imagine their being such a thing as the Borg. I also didn't
find most of the book believable. I do not think any other ending would have
fit the story. I am satisfied with the ending because it fit with the rest of
the book.
The setting suites the plot of the book because it takes place in space and that is the only place that a space ship could fly. This book takes place in the future in the year 2372 and also 2066 which is supposed to be after the third world war takes place on earth. I can't imagine the events in this story happing in out time period. If they were to happen at all it would have to be far in the future. I can't think of another setting that would have been more affective for this story.
