About the Artist
I live in the North Central Mountains of Arizona in the somewhat small city of Prescott, that we all refer to as "Every One"s Home Town". My home is located at 6,000 feet in elevation so we have the four seasons. I am fortunate because I am surrounded by the Prescott National Forest which gives me an endless supply of Ponderosa Pine Needles to work with. My husband "Sully" and I grow a few gourds mostly for our own use. We average 100 to 150 a year.
I am a self-taught artist in that the only studies in art I ever had was a few lessons in Tole Painting. I have been involved in some sort of art or crafts my entire life, however, I never got to use it much as I spent most of my time working and raising a family. I took up art when I was forced to quit working because of severe arthritis. I am also a cancer survivor and art work on Gourds has been a lot of therapy. I started Tole painting on different mediums and one day I found a gourd which just cried out to be painted. This got me hooked on gourds. From there I have expanded to woodburning, carving, inlay, etc. I like to try them all and there is always something new coming along.
I am a member of the American Gourd Society, Arizona Gourd Society, California Gourd Society, and President of the Yavapai Gourd Patch. I also do demonstrations and lectures on gourds at the local schools, and at recreational facilities.
