Alnwick

Alnwick (pronounced "ann-ick") Castle dates back to 1096 and has undergone several restorations. It is the second largest lived in castle in England, next to Windsor Castle. The castle is open to the public, but like so many others, photography is not allowed inside. This castle was most recently the setting for some of the scenes in the Harry Potter movies. One interesting feature, unique to this castle, is the statuary on top of the gatehouse. One story says these figures are intended to look like soldiers and convince any attackers that they are being watched.

The final picture on the page is of the window in an Alnwick pub called "Ye Olde Crosse". As the story goes, someone long ago was cleaning the inside of the window and died. Since then, it is believed, anyone who tries to clean the window will also die, so it is left dirty with a bunch of dirty bottles lying on the sill.
