Anna Hutchinson was the real founder of Rhode Island. At the close of the sixteeth century among the prominet famils in or near Alford were the Hutchinsons and Marburys. William Hutchison and Anne Mulbury were married Aug. 9 1612 in London England. They returned to Alford and on it's parish registers are recorded the baptizms of 14 children born to them between 1613 and 1633 the year before their departure for the New World. William and Anne came to New England in 1634 on the Ship "Griffin. William was then 48 and Anne 43. The landed in Boston, Sept. 18, 1634. William Hutchison died in Newport in 1642. Anne and several of her children were killed in an Indian Masscre on Manhatton Island, Pelham Bay. A bronze tablet on Split Rock. A boulder in Pelham Bay Park near the site of Mrs. Hutchinson's dwelling in 1643 was unvailed by the Society of Colonial Dames of the State of New York, May 3 19ll. Through Anne Hutchinson we are decended from Charlemagne, William the Conquerer, Alfred the Great and other royalty too numerous to mention can be found in history. Anne Hutchinson, the real founder of Rhode Island and the progenitor of many note worthy person in this country. Francis Marbury, the father of Anne, was the 3rd son of William Marbury Esquire of Ginby, Lincolnshire and Agnes, daughter of John Lenton. He married Elizabeth Moore by whom he had three daughters. His second wife Bridget, daughter of John Dryden. By this second marriage, Francis Marbury had eleven more children of whon Anne, the second child was baptized at Alford July 20, 1591. Her mother's eldest brother, Erasmus Dryden, created a Baronet in 1619, was the grandfather of the Poet Laureate, John Drayden. FRANCIS MARBURY, of London, father of Ann Hutchinson, a noted personage in the early colonial history of New England, was born in Grisby, in the parish of Burghupon-Bain, in the county of Lincoln, England. He was the son of William Marbury, Esquire, and Agnes, daughter of John Lenton, Esquire. He first married Elizabeth Moore, at St. Peter's at Gowts, in the city of Lincoln, August 19, 1583, by whom he had three daughters. He is described upon the church register as a "gentleman." Soon after the birth of his last child his wife died, and, in 1589, he married, for his second wife, Bridget Dryden, daughter of Sir John and Elizabeth (Cope) Dryden, of Canons Ashby, county of Northampton. About the year 1600 he had moved to London, for, October 28, 1605, he was presented to the rectory at St. Martins-in-the-Vintrey. In 1607-8, February 29, he was presented to the rectory of St. Pancreas, Soper Lane, which position, however, he resigned two years later. Soon after, January 15, 1609-10, he was presented to the rectory of St. Margaret, New Fish street, which position, in conjunction with that at St. Martins-in-the-Vintrey, he held till his death in 1610-11. By his will he bequeathed to his children œ1,600. It will be seen, therefore, that Ann Hutchinson and her sister, Catherine, by both parents, were descended from gentle and heraldic families of England. Notes for Bridget Dryden: BRIDGET DRYDEN, mother of Ann Hutchinson, who was prominent in early colonial history, and daughter of Sir John and Elizabeth (Cope) Dryden, was born at Canons Ashby, county of Northampton, England, in the early part of the reign of Queen Elizabeth. In 1589, she married the Rev. Francis Marbury, of Alford, county of Lincoln, son of William and Agnes (Lenton) Marbury, by whom, some say, she had twenty children. The family removed to London about the year 1600, and, upon the death of her husband in that place, in 1610-11, she was required, in pursuance of the provisions of his will, "to keep all his said children at her own charge one whole year after his decease if, in the meantime, she did not bestow them in marriage or place them in service."
