An extremely violent comedy?

The "theology" in this movie is only vaguely related to the theology of the Roman Catholic church. It has more to do with Milton, with some Norse mythology and I am sure a bunch of other elements thrown in.

The movie is very funny, but the extreme violence is troubling. The point of the movie seems to be that God is so loving, she can even forgive mass murderers. And, I suppose, that means even the makers of this film have hope of redemption <grin>.

Paradise Lost is available online.

The movie Dogma is conditionally recommended. Milton's Paradise Lost is mind-numbingly boring and definitely not recommended.

I wanted to see L. A. Confidential when it came out in the theaters, but I was put off by the length and by some of the reviews that seemed to complain about the complexity of the plot. Plus none of my friends seemed interested in it (bad marketing, I suspect).

Having just watched the DVD, I am very glad I waited. Not, however, because the movie is bad, but because it is so much better on DVD.

The movie is quite long -- well over three hours. And when you add an hour or so reviewing the added features on the DVD, it makes watching the movie a significant project! But it was well worthwhile. The extras on the DVD really did add to the movie, instead of just being "filler".

I found out about this DVD from "The Editor's Top 25" list at the DVD Journal.

Highly recommended.

Rated PG-13
This DVD came free with my new DVD player. I haven't watched the actual movie yet, but I watched the commentary by Michael Meyers and Jay Roach.

The commentary didn't appear to add anything to the movie at all. Although, of course, I can't be certain since I haven't actually watched the movie yet! It was quite boring. Will the movie itself be any better? It seems like it might have some funny moments, but I don't think Mike Meyers' brand of humor is for me.

Not recommended.
