Come skate with a star
Christmas is coming early this year for IFFSC members. With the Winter Games just around the corner, what could be more exciting than a visit from Olympic Silver Medalist Linda Fratianne, who will be in town for an IFFSC clinic Saturday, Dec. 8.
Fratianne, a four-time national and twice world champion who is now head professional at the Sun Valley Skating Center, will teach several classes for various skill levels from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Tautphaus Park rink. Since the clinic is sponsored by the club, members get to participate at no cost. The clinic is also open to non-members who are a Basic Skills Level 4 or above at a cost of $40 (or they can join the club for $35 and attend free). Please sign up at the rink on the figure skating bulletin board no later than Thursday, Dec. 6, so we will have a count of how many plan to attend.
This is a fabulous opportunity to meet, learn from and skate with an Olympian, so don't miss out. Bring your non-member figure skating friends, too, so they can learn and see first-hand how valuable an IFFSC membership really is. More information about the clinic may be obtained from Pam Farr or Patty Boam.

'Skating Lady' here next week
Too many snags in those tights? Skates feeling a bit snug? Just in the nick of time for the skating season and Christmas, Lin Mjaatvedt, otherwise known as the "Skating Lady," will be at the Tautphaus Park ice rink on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5, during the Basic Skills lessons with all her figure skating wares, ready to equip you with whatever you need or want for your favorite sport. Take a minute to check out her table and chances are good that you won't leave empty-handed.

Club jackets
Here's an item for the top of your Christmas wish list this year: a new IFFSC jacket. We'll be ordering new club jackets in the next few weeks. The color for our club is a striking royal blue with some great detailing that includes an IFFSC logo and a figure skater. Pam Farr has several samples to try on so you can find your size, and we're firming up prices now and will announce them soon. We plan to have these jackets available for Christmas giving.

Spring Show
Plans are in full swing for our spring ice show, which will follow an international theme. If skaters or parents are interested in serving on the committee, please contact Patty Boam, who is this year's chairwoman. The skating bulletin board, web site and newsletter will help keep you posted as details materialize.

Have a great month on the ice!

IFFSC SKATER OF THE MONTH

The IFFSC featured skater of the month is Lauren. Lauren is a fifth grader in one of our local elementary schools in Idaho Falls. Our local club reporters were very fortunate to be able to grab a few minutes of Lauren's time to share with you. Here is what Lauren had to say:

Lisa: How long have you been skating?
Lauren: This is my eighth year.

Lisa: What sparked your interest in skating?
Lauren: Watching Oksana Baiul in the 1994 Olympics.

Lisa: What advice would you give to someone who just started or wants to start skating?
Lauren: Never say "I can't" because you can! If you say "I can't" you are just giving up on what you can do.

Lisa: What are some of your other hobbies and interests?
Lauren: Soccer, Ballet, piano and reading.

Lisa: Who is your favorite professional ice skater?
Lauren: I have three: Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi and Tara Lipinski.

Lisa: What was your favorite program?
Lauren: "Reflections" from Mulan.

Lisa: What is your favorite skating move?
Lauren: AXEL!! Also a spread eagle to Ina Bauer to an inside spread eagle into a pivot combination.

Lisa: Do you have anything to say to the club and/or people in it?
Lauren: Thanks for your support and for encouraging me.

Lisa: Do you have a special message for anyone else?
Lauren: Mom, thanks for taking me skating in the morning.
