Warren was born to Lilburn Ainsel Jobe and Sina Jane (Johnson) Jobe in Hillsboro, Oregon 2 CONC . The family moved to Goldendale Washington not long after Warren's birth. While in Goldendal 2 CONC e Warren's Father worked in a hop yard close to a railroad. Warren got his first job at abou 2 CONC t age 3 or 4 helping unload watermelon. He couldn't lift most of them but got the smaller one 2 CONC s. His pay was a cracked watermelon which turned out to be quite a chore to carry home. Whil 2 CONC e the family was in Goldendale Warren's sister Elsie was born. They moved to Yakima, Washingt 2 CONC on and his father worked on a farm. One day he was with his father building a gate in the irr 2 CONC igation ditch, when a rattlesnake came out. His father cut the snake in the middle and laye 2 CONC d it on a stump close by. Warren asked his father if he could watch it as it was still moving 2 CONC . His father said he could but not to get to close. He stayed back but the snake was hissin 2 CONC g at him and the breath of the snake made him sick. After that through all his life he couldn 2 CONC 't get close to snakes as the smell of them made him sick. His brother Earl was born in Yak 2 CONC ima, Washington. 2 CONT He remembers his Mother only spanked him once. He wanted to go swimming with a group o 2 CONC f boys that were neighbors but his Mother told him he couldn't go. The boys stayed around pl 2 CONC ayed for awhile then decided to go swimming. Warren sneaked off with them. he thought he cou 2 CONC ld slip in the front door and she wouldn't know he was gone. When he went in the door she wa 2 CONC s waiting for him with a shingle in her hand. He turned and run thinking she couldn't catch h 2 CONC im but as he was going around the corner of the house she caught him and give him a good padd 2 CONC ling. 2 CONT It was quite a blow to lose his Mother. His Mother died at child birth. Warren was almo 2 CONC st 8 years old then. His father was having quite a struggle raising them so hired a woman t 2 CONC o take them to Fossil, Oregon where Warren's Mother's sister Mattie (Johnson) Hamilton lived 2 CONC . Mattie was married to Wayne Hamilton and lived on a ranch at West Fork about 20 miles out o 2 CONC f Fossil. Wayne's parents had a farm on Cottonwood Creek about 4 miles out of Fossil. They we 2 CONC re impressed with Warren and wanted him to stay a week with them. He went to their place an 2 CONC d stayed a week and they talked him into staying another week, which he did but decided to co 2 CONC ntinue to live with them. They raised him and put him through high school. He went to grad 2 CONC e school at the cottonwood school where he met Nancy Owens and her brothers. He played with N 2 CONC ancy's brothers and fell in love with her. They were married August 14, 1917. In early 1918 h 2 CONC e was called into the Army. He went through boot camp at Camp Fremont, California. He was shi 2 CONC pped to New York City to be sent over to France after they got aboard the ship Armistise wa 2 CONC s declared, so they unloaded them and sent them to another Army Camp in Virginia. They were t 2 CONC here for a short time then they were sent to Fort Lewis, Washington and discharged. Before g 2 CONC oing in the Army he had homesteaded a ranch on Pine Creek 10 miles out of Fossil and buil 2 CONC t a cabin on it. He raised sheep for awhile then sold them for One dollar a head. He bought c 2 CONC attle but sold them when he had to go in the Army. He and nancy lived on the homestead for aw 2 CONC hile but times were tough so they went to work for a neighbor on Pine Creek. While there Nanc 2 CONC y was pregnant and rode a horse to Fossil a month before her delivery time. A son Thomas Andr 2 CONC ew was born February 8, 1920 in Fossil at Nancy's Parents home. Tom took his first horsebac 2 CONC k ride at age 1 month when Nancy returned to her job for Al Conlee at the ranch on Pine Creek 2 CONC . They worked for Al until fall of that year. Nancy's parents were working at a sawmill at t 2 CONC he head of Butte Creek. Her Father was working in the mill and her Mother was cooking for th 2 CONC e crew. She needed help cooking and there was an opening in the mill so they moved there an 2 CONC d lived in a tent. Nancy helped her mother cook and Warren worked in the mill. They closed t 2 CONC he mill down so they all moved back to Fossil. Warren and Nancy still had the homestead but r 2 CONC ented a wheat ranch out of Fossil. They run cattle and raised wheat. The price of wheat hi 2 CONC t a very low and the woman who owned the wheat ranch raised the rent on the ranch. They deci 2 CONC ded not to continue raising wheat. While on the wheat ranch a daughter was born, Annabel Cat 2 CONC herine, she was 6 when they left the ranch. Warren and Tom got in the sheep business when To 2 CONC m was about 4 or 5 years old. A neighbor gave Tom a bum lamb and when the lamb was about a ye 2 CONC ar old the neighbor talked Tom into trading for a yew. She had twins a buck and a yew. The ye 2 CONC w had lambs and the herd grew to about 100 head. After leaving the wheat ranch Warren & Nanc 2 CONC y and family moved back to the homestead. They raised sheep and cattle. Warren had bought tw 2 CONC o other homesteads while on the wheat ranch. The depression of the 1930's dealt a low blow t 2 CONC o Warren and Nancy and they were about to lose everything. Warren got a job at the Kinsua Saw 2 CONC mill. They moved there and rented a two room house. All they had in the house was one tap fo 2 CONC r water. no electricity and no inside plumbing. They still had the homestead, cattle and shee 2 CONC p. They eventually sold the sheep but kept the homestead and cattle. They farmed on weekends 2 CONC . When Tom was a sophmore in high school they bought a house in Fossil and moved back to Fos 2 CONC sil. Warren commuted to Kinzua to work, fourteen miles from Fossil. At first he road with oth 2 CONC er men that had cars but later road in a bus that was built out of plywood & 2x4's. It had on 2 CONC e small window in the door and a vent in the roof. It was built on a one ton truck. It had b 2 CONC enches along the sides made out of 2X6 and 2X12 with no cushions. Nancy worked in the telepho 2 CONC ne office for awhile after that in Fossil. She wanted more spending money she said. They di 2 CONC d quite a bit of traveling after she retired, mostly to see relatives and friends. They had l 2 CONC ots of friends. Warren was 72 years old when he retired from Kinzua, he received a certificat 2 CONC e of thanks and being there the longest of anyone whoever worked there. They sold the homeste 2 CONC ads a few years before Warren retired from Kinzua. He wanted Tom to come back and ranch but i 2 CONC t didn't turn out that way. 2 CONT Warren and Nancy lived in the home at Fossil for over twenty years. Warren liked gardeni 2 CONC ng and always raised a garden wherever he lived. He also like fishing which was his greates 2 CONC t sport. He hunted elk and deer until he was around 90 years old. He lost his eyesight to whe 2 CONC re he couldn't see to well from having the flu. Working in the sawmills without protection ca 2 CONC used him to lose most of his hearing. Nancy had 3 strokes and passed away at age 85. Warre 2 CONC n was lost but continued living in their house and taking care of their little dog Tubby. H 2 CONC e was gradually losing more of his eyesight so at age 99 he asked Annabel if he could live wi 2 CONC th her. She and her husband lived in Fossil too. She told him sure you can so he went to liv 2 CONC e with her. After she kept him for five years then her health went bad. Tom and his wife too 2 CONC k him and looked after him after that until he was 107. His legs went bad and he fell a lot s 2 CONC o the family put him in a nursing home in Madras, Oregon, where he could have 24 hour care. h 2 CONC e couldn't figure out why he had to be in a hospital but finally got adjusted. The people i 2 CONC n the nursing home loved him and took wonderful care of him. He passed on at the age of almos 2 CONC t 110 years of age. 2 CONT While living with Annabel and Tom he had many birthday parties which he enjoyed very muc 2 CONC h. He was always asked what his formula for living so long was. His answer was: "I never use 2 CONC d tobacco in any form, never tried to drink a brewery dry and never quarreled with my wife. H 2 CONC e got to go to Canada and see Lois daughter and her family. His first time to Canada. He too 2 CONC k his first plane ride to Virginia and back to see his grandson, great grandson and great gr 2 CONC anddaughter. While going on the plane he kept looking out the window then remarked,"I think t 2 CONC his is better then riding in a car". He liked going for rides in the country seeing the fiel 2 CONC ds and animals even though his eyesight was bad he could pick out different things and was th 2 CONC rilled he could. He could see a little better in the bright day light. At one birthday part 2 CONC y while he was at Tom's given by the bishop of the church, the young women's organization o 2 CONC f the 3rd ward in Syracuse, Utah made a banner that read "Happy 107 Birthday Brother Jobe. h 2 CONC e couldn't see to eat the chocolate cake so Tom fed him a bite at a time. Lois (Tom's wife 2 CONC ) was so thrilled that so many came. 2 CONT If Nancy had lived 5 month longer, She and Warren would have been married 65 years. Warre 2 CONC n is with her now and they can continue on together as they did here on earth. 2 CONT WRITTEN BY THOMAS A. Jobe 2 CONT William and Alice were quite secretive about how they met and where they were married bu 2 CONC t according to where their children were born, it must have been in Oklahoma or Missouri wher 2 CONC e they started life together. They lived in Vinita, Oklahoma for several years as most of th 2 CONC eir children were born there. They left Oklahoma and went to Kansas for a short time, then r 2 CONC oad the train to Oregon. They bought a team of horses and wagon in Arlington, Oregon. It to 2 CONC ok quite a few days to travel to Fossil oregon where their destination was. While on the wa 2 CONC y they camped in the open but one camp was made under an overhanging cliff. It was raining b 2 CONC ut the cliff kept the rain off them. After arriving in Fossil they rented a place up cottonwo 2 CONC od Creek about 8 miles from Fossil. They applied for homesteading rights about 3 miles dow 2 CONC n the creek from there. They built a cabin and barn and moved on the homestead. The childre 2 CONC n, Boyd, Charles, Jack, Nancy & John went to school at the cottonwood school. Lee was to you 2 CONC ng. Viola was born on the homestead. They bought 2 lots in Fossil and built a home on them a 2 CONC fter selling the homestead. William went to work helping build roads and working on ranches 2 CONC . Anna was born in the Fossil home. 2 CONT Several years later both William and Alice worked at a sawmill, William worked logging in th 2 CONC e logs and Alice cooked for the crew. Charlie fell timber, Jack worked in the mill and so di 2 CONC d John and Lee. The mill shut down so william took his horses and started building roads aga 2 CONC in. Jack, John and Lee helped him. Not to long after they started on the roads a company com 2 CONC e into the area and built a sawmill called Kinzua Sawmill Company. They all went to work the 2 CONC re. Alice moved there as soon as they got a house built, but she didn't sell the house in Fo 2 CONC ssil. She said that was where she was going to die. While they were on the homestead ther 2 CONC e was a family of Indians would come through and William and Alice let them camp on their pla 2 CONC ce. The indians came up from Celilo Falls where their headquarters was. After William bough 2 CONC t an automobile he and Alice would go down to Cililo Falls to get salmon from the indians. O 2 CONC n arrival there Alice would go in the teepee with the squaws and William would go out to th 2 CONC e falls to get fish. He always took a 5th of whiskey with him and the indian chief and him w 2 CONC ould have a good visit. The chief was the one who always camped on the homestead. William a 2 CONC nd the chief were like two little boys giggling and telling stories. William and Alice coul 2 CONC d talk their language so were always welcome. They always went home with fish at no cost. W 2 CONC illiam worked at Kinzua until he decided to retire. Alice got cancer of the bowels and passe 2 CONC d on. William went back to work at the mill during World War II. He retired again after th 2 CONC e war was over and lived with Nancy & Warren Jobe. Viola moved to the Dalles, Oregon and h 2 CONC e went and lived with her where he passed on. Anna (aunty Babe) can tell a lot more than I h 2 CONC ave.
