Step To

A Healthier Lifestyle!

"Step to a Healthy Lifestyle" bridges the gap of today's recommendations for physical activity to previously established knowledge of the calorie expenditure in exercise. It illustrates the number of steps as measured by a pedometer that are recommended for increasing health benefits. It also highlights the recommended health benefits zones as reported in the Surgeon General's Report (1996). Moderate levels of physical activity are illustrated as those most recommended for a healthy lifestyle. As we continue to focus on the contribution of all physical activity towards a healthy lifestyle step counts are an easy and inexpensive indicator of how well each person is doing on a daily basis.

Fitness Education

Pyramid Portfolio's

Introducing a new educational tool for physical education specialists and students: The Fitness Education Pyramid Portfolio The folders feature the Fitness Education Pyramid and educational information on the inside. The portfolio's come in three levels, elementary, middle and high school and has two inside pockets. You may also order the portfolio with "Steps to a Healthier Lifestyle" on the cover. Apply the use of the Pedometer to your classes with this new portfolio that includes the educational information you need to teach the number of steps needed and the benefits involved. Document information on how your program meets the National and State standards and place it in the FEP portfolio. Use the cover to help students understand and relate to the fitness components of a healthy lifestyle. There is information on each of the portfolios about the Surgeon General's report. The Fitness Education Pyramid Portfolio's have an extended end to place a label and are easy to store in a file box for each of your classes. This educational tool will aid in class management and represent a professional presentation for parent/teacher conferences.

The Fitness Education Pyramids

The Fitness Education Pyramid is placed on the wall of the gym to give the students the information they need about the zones of the fitness pyramid. The first zone is the Weight Managment Zone. The frequency, intensity, time, and type (F.I.T.T.) are discussed for this zone. Students are able to see that they only needed to get off the couch and start moving to qualify for the zone. The Health Heart Zone allows for the development of the heart muscle and a little more intensity. Students who are never motivated to move in their Aerobic zone three times a week for 15-30 minutes found another way to qualify their activity and feel good about it. The athletes are able to perfect their workouts and reach peak performances in the Power or Anaerobic and Red Zones. The less active students are able to identify with a zone and feel the positive effects of activity. The Elementary pyramid has graphics for children to easily understand. The Elementary pyramid uses pictures for our children to relate to and understand the concepts. The Middle/Jr High pyramid was designed by Middle School aged students who loved what it taught them! The High School pyramid takes it one step further to include perceived exertions. Our newest development is the Caloric Expenditure Chart.

Please Note!!

After much discussion with ourselves and other professionals in the physical education field, we have decided to change the name of the bottom zone of our fitness pyramids to "Weight Management Zone” instead of "Fat Burning Zone". It was never our intention to promote that activity within the parameters that we set for this zone made it the ONLY zone where fat was burned, or that a proportionately larger amount of fat was burned here. But, that seems to be the way people interpreted our information. Noted as the "Weight Management Zone", we hope that you can still discuss the benefits of doing activity at this intensity level. And, again, this is the level of activity that the Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health hopes that ALL people can accomplish regularly. We welcome continuing discussion regarding the update of our pyramids as more research becomes available. Please feel free to contact any one of us for further discussion or questions.
