How many types of fiber are there and what are some of the benefits?

The two types of fiber are soluble and insoluble and both have been shown to have health benefits. Fiber is the undigestible part of a plant and it passes through the GI tract undisturbed. Soluble fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, and oat bran, is thought to lower cholesterol. Insoluble fiber, found in whole grains, vegetables, and wheat bran, is theorized to help prevent colon cancer. The recommended daily intake for fiber from the National Cancer Institute is 20-35 grams. Fiber is found in a wide variety of foods, so it is not difficult to take in adequate amounts. When adding fiber to the diet, do so gradually while increasing your water intake.
