Forever Healthy
Kevin Kelly, L.R.D.
I read an article about a study showing that fat may provide protection from a stroke. Does this mean we should increase our fat intake?
No. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested that fat may protect against stroke in men. Saturated fat and monounsaturated fat seemed to provide protection against stroke whereas polyunsaturated fat had no effect. Researchers speculate that the arteries feeding the brain may have a different composition than the arteries in the heart. While this study seem goes to against the recommendation of limiting our fat intake, this does not mean reducing dietary fat no longer has health benefits. The one conclusion which can be drawn here reinforces that dietary fat plays an important role in health. Too much fat or too little fat can have detrimental effects on health. Limiting the fat in our diets to no more than 20%-35% of the total caloric intake is still sound nutrition advice.
