What is a nutrition consultant?

A nutrition consultant is someone who advises others on diet and other nutrition related issues. It is a generic term that anyone can use and, too often, an unqualified person capitalizes on that title. It takes more than simply passing along written material and products to be a credible nutritional consultant. Ask that person for proof of formal training in the field of food and nutrition. The health profession recognizes Registered Dietitians (RD) and Dietetic Technicians, Registered (DTR) as qualified members of the health team. RDs and DTRs have appropriate degrees from accredited universities, have passed a national exam, and are licensed in states that require licensure. Nutrition is an important component in maintaining a healthy weight, managing medical conditions, and in health promotion. When it comes to food and nutrition, why trust your health to just anyone?
