Should I use the height/weight charts to determine my ideal body weight?

I don’t advise it. The height/weight charts are not realistic for many people. They have been revised several times since the first chart came out in 1959, and those revisions can be confusing. In addition, the charts erroneously send out the message that people should fit into categories. At best, the charts are merely a guideline and they are not written in stone. Instead of picking a magic number from the height/weight charts, focus on what is a healthy weight for you. A healthy weight is different for each one of us and it is based on many individual factors. One reasonable way to determine a healthy weight is how your clothes fit. You will find that maintaining a healthy weight is a realistic goal which can bring lifelong health benefits.
