Is the cabbage soup diet an effective way to lose weight?

No it isn't. The cabbage soup diet is another in a long list of nutrition gimmicks. This starvation diet is nutritionally inadequate and a serving of cabbage soup is about equal to a slice of bread or an apple. People who lose weight on this plan do so only because they are taking in less food than their body requires. This diet is not realistic because it cannot be followed very long. In addition, since weight is often lost rapidly, much of the weight lost is water and muscle mass. The diet is often on the letterhead of a hospital or major organization, such as the American Heart Association (AHA). The implication is that the diet is safe and endorsed by the AHA and hospitals, which is not true. The choice is yours: follow unrealistic diet gimmicks or establish a sound diet you can follow for life.
