Are high impact aerobics the only way to improve cardiovascular fitness?

No. When aerobics first became popular, high impact classes were fashionable. Many people developed problems with their ankles, knees, or backs from the constant pounding on the floor. Low impact aerobics quickly became the norm. To improve your cardiovascular fitness level, bring your pulse rate up to an individualized target heart rate for a certain period of time. A low impact aerobic class can accomplish that for most individuals. While high impact classes may still be offered at some facilities, most people prefer low impact classes because they are safer, less stressful on the body, and still build cardiovascular endurance. If aerobic classes do not appeal to you, there are many other options for improving cardiovascular fitness.
