More than two years and
countless hours later, it is done. On May 11, 1996 I first performed
most of this material live. Since then the album has been in production;
I had no idea it would take so long. I was just going to have a simple
production completed in my house when everything just got out of hand.
"Let's have live musicians, let's use Pro Tools, let's mix and track at
Prairie Sun..." I have to gratefully thank Kevin Sellers for convincing
me (quite often with great opposition on my part) for seeing the project
through and giving it the time and care that it deserves. The difference
is breathtaking, going from a collection of songs I enjoyed writing to
an album I enjoy listening to. Sometimes I stand beweirldled and
point at the speakers, amazed that I wrote that! All the musicians
on this album are dear friends of mine and I commend them for putting their
souls into this music. In many cases, they transformed the song into
something different I never imagined. Special thanks to Jason for
that solo on Warmer, even though he still doesn't know what happened.
"Wait...roll that back...what the hell did I do there"--Jason. The
booklet was going to be a simple, small, black and white, and just words
when I ran into Jeanette Wierman. It was a total fluke with perfect
timing, I had not seen her in years. I said I was working on an album
and she said she was a photographer -- the rest is in these pages.
The amazing thing about Jeanette is she never questioned my outlandish
ideas and methods for images; she just went with the flow. Yes, those
letters under the tree are huge four-foot cardboard cutouts staked into
the ground. Yes, we individually ironed on the words to sleep in
the rough shape of someone lying on the bed. I'm amazed at and proud
of the final result we accomplished.
I hope you enjoy this album as much as I enjoyed
making it. Please get in touch with me and let me know what
you think. Leave your address and I'll keep you up to date about
what I'm doing.
