Q. How much does it cost to purchase the FamilySearcher software?

A. The FamilySearcher software is being offered at no charge.

 

Q. Can I install the program at our local genealogical society or Family History Center?

A. Yes, this program is available for download and installation at genealogical societies, libraries and Family History Centers.

 

Q. Does FamilySearcher support the use of FireFox or other browser software?

A. Currently only Internet Explorer is supported.

 

Q. How can I learn more about how to use the FamilySearcher software?

A. There are two sources of help that you can turn to: 1) the Help file that is included with the FamilySearcher software that is available under the Help menu.  2) The "How to Use FamilySearcher" PDF document that can be downloaded and printed from this web site.

 

Q. Can FamilySearcher read a PAF file directly or must I first create a GEDCOM file?

A. FamilySearcher can only read a GEDCOM file and cannot currently open other kinds of genealogical files.

 

Q. How can I make requests for possible future FamilySearcher program improvements?

Q. How often are updates made to the FamilySearcher software program?

A. This is an "after the homework is done and the kids are in bed" software project that I fit in as I can.  Updates are made as time permits.

 

Q. Is the FamilySearcher software connected in any way to the FamilySearch.org web site?

A. Only as user of the data provided there - but otherwise - "no".

 

Q. How can I take advantage of the automatic login capability when visiting FamilySearch.org?

A. From the FamilySearcher menus - select "Tools" and then "FamilySearch.org Login Options...".  Fill in your user name and password - and then check the option to "Enable FamilySearch.org Auto Login".  Click on "OK".  The next time you start the program you will be automatically logged in to the FamilySearch.org web site.

 

Q. What is an OUP file and why would I want to create one?

A. An Ordinance Update File (OUP) can be used by the LDS Family Historian to transfer ordinance dates found on the Internet IGI back into your Personal Ancestral File (PAF) file.  The PDF document called "How to Use FamilySearcher" describes the steps required to take advantage of this capability.

 

Q. Where can I learn more about the LDS temple codes that are used to indicate the temple in which ordinances were completed?
