Artist
George Masso - Trombone
George Masso was born in Cranston, Rhode Island on November 17th 1926.
His primary instrument is the trombone, but he is at home with the piano and
vibes. He was inspired to take up the trombone in his teens by Lou McGarity's
record "Yours" which he had heard on the radio. Jack Teagarden
and Trummy Young were also major influences and at 22 Masso found himself
working with Jimmy Dorsey's Orchestra for two years, but gave up professional
music for teaching to support his wife and family.
In 1973, with his children grown up, he began to look at the possibility
of professional music again, with the encouragement of friends including Bobby
Hackett. He worked with Hackett, with Benny Goodman for a year and a half,
with Bobby Rosengarden's band at the Rainbow Room and at Eddie Condon's.
He is an elegant, highly gifted trombonist with a perfectly musical approach.
