NGC 1491 in mapped color

NGC 1491 is a ionized HII  emission nebula  lit up by a hot O6 star near the center of the image.  This star is surrounded by a bubble of gas shown in blue (OIII) light.  The surrounding area is full of hydrogen gas.  To the left of  the star lighting up this region is a long pillar of gas and shock front pointing towards the star.
