Nazghul/Haxima 0.5.6 released |
30 January 2007 07:51 |
| Nazghul/Haxima 0.5.6 is now available in source form. This is a bugfix-only release, and most of the bugs are minor and will not prevent you from playing Haxima (although a few might make it a bit too easy). Save files from 0.5.5 should still work. |
Crasher found in 0.5.5 |
29 January 2007 08:01 |
| Unfortunately, this one wasn't found until we were all set to go with the 0.5.6 maintenance release. It seems to be pretty uncommon and you can manually fix your save files. See the FAQ for details. |
nazghul-0.5.5 for Windows |
02 January 2007 17:43 |

Workaround for 0.5.5 libpng link error |
16 December 2006 11:07 |
If you encounter a link error with libpng when trying to build the 0.5.5
release, here is a workaround:
$ ./configure LIBS=-lpng
Not everyone will encounter this, it depends on how your SDL_image library
was built when it links to libpng. Many thanks to Jason Tibbs for reporting
this problem and the workaround.

nazghul ported to AmigaOS4 |
09 November 2006 17:31 |
Hubert Maier writes:
"Hi there, thought you may know about this port for the new AmigaOS4 (PPC)
http://os4.hyperion-entertainment.biz/, the binary can be downloaded from
here: http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=game/roleplaying/haxima.lha"
Thanks, Hubert!
|
nazghul-0.5.4 for Mac available |
29 July 2006 07:58 |
Tim Douglas writes:
"The binary is currently PPC only (not a Universal Binary), because I
wanted to get something out as quickly as possible. I have no idea how
it runs through Rosetta on the Intel Macs, but I will be getting a
chance to test that soon. In addition, the UB should be coming Real
Soon Now(tm). Until then, I'd love some feedback on how it runs
through the emulation."
Get it from the download page.

Devblog alive |
09 July 2006 16:31 |
| My personal nazghul devblog is alive again. I hope you all have something better to do than read it, but in the unlikely event you don't, have a peek inside the mind of a bad-but-sporadically-productive hacker. |

Haxima available via Fedora Extra's |
15 February 2006 22:32 |
Thanks to Jason Tibbs for pushing Haxima through the review process. He
writes:
Nazghul should now be in the Fedora Extras 4 repository; as soon
as it is signed and pushed to the mirrors, Fedora users can just do
"yum install nazghul-haxima" and look in the Games menu to play.

Screenshot contest |
07 February 2006 00:17 |
The screen shots on the home page are a bit dated. I'd like to update them with
shots of Haxima in action, so send me your good ones. Some guidelines:
|
Blended terrain |
07 February 2006 00:17 |
| Here's a screenshot of some blended coastal terrain. Kris Parker provided the coastal transition sprites. This uses a simple blending algorithm I'm experimenting with. Like it? Hate it? Strong opinions tastefully expressed are welcome on the nazghul-user mailing list. |
0.5.2 save game incompatible with 0.5.3 |
07 February 2006 00:06 |
| Some changes to scripted objects can cause script errors with Kama if a 0.5.2 savegame is used with 0.5.3. Don't do that, then. There's no simple fix. |
OSX nazghul-0.5.3 available |
06 February 2006 01:31 |
| Tim Douglas has posted an OSX binary for 0.5.3 on the download page. |
nazghul-0.5.3 released |
05 February 2006 01:03 |
| This is another maintenance release. The biggest change is to the source distro installer, which is more like a typical UNIX program now. Other changes include some new sprites and minor bugfixes. |
Docs added to Windows install |
30 January 2006 09:57 |
| Kris pointed out that the latest Windows install is missing the README and USERS_GUIDE docs. The Windows installer has been updated on SourceForge to included these. |
OSX release for 0.5.2 available |
26 January 2006 21:05 |
| Once again Tim Douglas has graciously provided an OSX binary. Get it now from the download site. |
Windows installer for 0.5.2 updated |
26 January 2006 21:04 |
| Thanks to Kris for reporting that the new Windows installer for 0.5.2 didn't include the .wav files. This has been fixed, so if you miss the sound grab the new installer from the download page. |
nazghul-0.5.2 released |
25 January 2006 23:55 |
|
This is a maintenance release which contains a number of bugfixes. Thanks
to everyone who provided bug reports, debug info, patches and art.
For Windows users this release contains my first attempt at a "real" installer. I haven't figured out how to add things to the Start menu or the desktop yet, so after installation you'll need to browse to the install folder and double-click on "nazghul". Hopefully by the next release things will be a bit more professional. |
Sprite transparency tool |
22 January 2006 13:30 |
| Wrote a simple utility that will add a two-pixel wide black outline to sprites with a magenta background. I'd prefer to just have a Gimp plugin that would do this, but for the curious here's outline.c. outline.make is a Makefile with the compiler flags that work on my box. |
NPC party in dungeon fix (part 2) |
21 January 2006 20:03 |
| I hoped I had this problem fixed in the nazghul-0.5.1 release but not so. This time I caught it in the act with a debugger. That's not to say there may be other lurking bugs which can cause the same symptom, but so far I don't know of any more. I think I'm going to go ahead and move the nazghul-0.5.2 release ahead of schedule and include this fix. Look for it in the next couple of days. Meanwhile, be sure and let me know about any other problems so I can include as many fixes as possible in nazghul-0.5.2. |
Bad ladders |
19 January 2006 20:56 |
| The ladder down from Kraken Lakes causes a crash, and the ladder up from the Passage to Absalot leads to the wrong place. Fix both problems by replacing kraken-lakes.scm and road_to_absalot.scm. |
ascii.c assert found! |
16 January 2006 20:30 |
|
Thanks to Claude for tracking this one down. The final fix will be in the
next release, which is scheduled for the end of this month. Until then
Windows user's can download a fixed binary here. For those of you building from source replace
src/conv.c and rebuild.
Update: an OSX release that addresses this as well as the runes.scm problem below is available here. Addendum:Links redirected to the latest release. |
Help debug ascii.c assert |
16 January 2006 14:03 |
Apparently this is not limited to windows systems or US keyboards. Anyone
who can reproduce this with a debugger please get me a stack trace. Also,
it might be helpful for you to compile and run the following test file,
also available here.
#include < stdio.h>
#include < ctype.h>
int main(int argc, char **argv){
int i;
for (i=0;i<256;i++) {
printf("%d: %c\n", i, isprint(i) ? 'y':'n');
}
return 0;
}
In the absence of other information my theory is that on some systems
isprint() returns true for values below 32 (the ASCII space character).
|
Help debug Windows assert |
11 January 2006 20:07 |
If
you are a Windows user who has experienced a crash while conversing with NPC's,
check your stderr file. If it says:
Assertion failed: c >= ' ', file ascii.c, line 48
Then please help me debug this by replacing your nazghul.exe with this one. This is nazghul-0.5.1
with an extra debug flag turned on that will log your keystrokes to the
stdout file while you are playing the game (note: it will ONLY log
keystrokes received by the game, it's NOT a general-purpose keystroke
logger, and if you are aware that everyone is out to get you then you
don't have to trust me: check stdout for yourself in a text editor like
Notepad). If you see the crash please send your stdout as an
attachment to the nazghul user
mailing list. Thanks! |
Bugfix: can't pick up Runes |
11 January 2006 08:00 |
| A bug that prevents g)et from working on runes has been found. Replace your runes.scm to fix it. Both nazghul-0.5.0 and nazghul-0.5.1 are affected. |
| A bug in the 0.5.1 and earlier scripts has been identified. Replace books.scm and kathryn.scm to fix it. |
| nazghul-0.5.1 is available for download. This fixes the critical bugs found in nazghul-0.5.0 so far. Your saved game will still work, but may require some repair. See the FAQ for details. Thanks to David Veatch, Steve Riberdy, Chris Travers and Sam Glasby for reporting bugs. |
| A bug that may occur at the end of the Thief's quest has been identified. See the FAQ for a fix. |
| Another save game corruption bug has been identified. See the FAQ for info on workarounds until we can get this fixed in the next maintenance release. |
| A save game corruption bug has been identified. See the FAQ for info on workarounds until we can get this fixed in the next maintenance release. |
| A batch file for automatically backing up save games on Windows has been provided by David Veatch. |
| A MacOSX binary for nazghul-0.5.0 and Haxima is available for download. Thanks to Tim Douglas for providing this. |
