My work reflects my love of all things sensual; that is, textures, colors and forms that delight the senses. I create each piece from start to finish. First, I envision each piece in my mind, sometimes sketching it on paper. Then I create the piece from stoneware clay with my own hands, usually on the potter's wheel, but sometimes by hand, forming the piece from slabs of clay. Next, I trim the piece, sometimes make attachments, bisque fire, and glaze it with glazes I formulate and mix myself. I work to find the best combinations of color and texture. Finally, I fire the pieces either to cone 6 in an oxidation firing or using a traditional Rakú firing. This final firing bonds the glaze to the clay and brings out the colors and textures I strive to find with my glaze formulations.

As a potter, I am interested not only in the visual impact of a piece, but the entire experience that comes from holding that piece in your hands. I love the harmony and balance of the component parts and the textures of the clay and the glazes; the symmetry of a handle that becomes an integrated part of a pitcher or teapot, rather than appearing to be a casual afterthought. I began creating pottery in 1990, and have been doing so seriously since 1992. My home is in Sioux City, Iowa, where my studio looks out onto rambling gardens filled with color and texture that change with the seasons. This beauty provides both reflection and inspiration. My work encompasses both functional and decorative pieces. I strive to merge beauty, art, form, and a bit of myself into each piece I create.
