Nancy Bailey Prevost, 82, died May 15 at Methodist LeBonheur Germantown Hospital in Germantown, TN. Services will be May 17, 11am from Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cumberland, Dr. Shawn Parker assisted by Rev. Keith Harwell officiating. The body will lie at the church from 10am until service time. Burial will follow in Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be May 16, 5-8pm at Calvert Funeral Home of West Point, which is handling the arrangements. Mrs. Prevost was born Sept. 17, 1925 in Cumberland to the late Zader Vail Bailey & Robert Edward Lee Bailey, and was an Elementary School teacher for 37 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Columbus, and was preceded in death by her husband, Grady M. Prevost; brothers, Joe Allen Bailey, Robert E. Lee Bailey Jr., John David Bailey & Jessie Hugh Bailey; and sisters, Lera Bailey Hamilton & Opal Bailey Vaughn. Prevost. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ann Josey (Dallas) of Olive Branch; sons, Grady A. Prevost (Ann) of Columbus & John W. Prevost (Melanie) of Caledonia; grandchildren, Abigail Prevost, Lea Ann Oglesby, Lara Ann Sansing, Joel Robert Josey, Jonathan Josey & Joshua Josey; great grandchildren, Allie Rose Sansing & Aaron Christopher Sansing; and sister, Zader Lee Bailey of Meridian. Annie Johnson
Annie M. Johnson, 79, died May 10 at Starkville Manor Nursing Home in Starkville. Services will be May 16, 11am at Peter’s Rock Church of God in Christ, Supt. Joseph Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in 16th Section Cemetery in Starkville. Visitation is May 15, noon-6pm at West Memorial Funeral Home in Starkville. Mrs. Johnson was born Aug. 6, 1928 in Lowndes Co. to the late Richard & Annie Bell Rose Duncan, and worked as a custodian. She is survived by her sister, Mary Martin of Starkville; and brother, Walter Duncan of St. Louis. Pallbearers will be friends & family.


James C. Wilson, Sr.
James Clarence “Big Jim” Wilson, Sr., 77, died May 13 at BMH-GT. Services were May 15 at Kilgore-Green Funeral Home Chapel in Jasper, AL, Rev. David Byrd & Rev. Charles W. Powell officiating. Burial followed in Walker Memory Gardens. Kilgore-Green Funeral Home Chapel handled the arrangements. Mr. Wilson was born June 22, 1930 in Jasper to the late Audie & Pauline Wilson, and was a Korean War veteran and member of the National Guard. After working with Moore Handley Hardware Co., he opened Wilson Hardware in Columbus, and later partnered with his dad and son in the family motorcycle business, S&W Honda-Yamaha in Jasper. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Columbus, but attended Mt. Zion Baptist. He was an active member of the Columbus Boat Owners Assn. and a 13-year member of AA. He is survived by his wife, Barbara L. Wilson of Columbus; son, Jim (Janie) Wilson Jr.; daughters, Lynn (Tim) Aaron & Tracy R. Lindsay; grandchildren, Brittany Buchanan, Bethanne Wilson, Whit Wilson, MaLeigh Aaron & Kason Aaron; and many friends. Pallbearers were Allen Moekle, Carl Froshour, Sam Platt, III, Joe Douglas, Bill Cole, Kerry Grelle & Stan Randolph.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Jacob Vinson and is survived by his mother, Madglean Vinson of Vernon; wife, Deborah Woods Vinson of Vernon; and daughter, Annah Rebekah Vinson of Vernon.

Burial followed in Sulligent City Cemetery. Mr. Apollos was born in McKinney, TX to the late Stanley & Jessie Adine Haynes Apollos, and was a Baptist and a commercial truck driver for many years. He was preceded in death by his brother, Amon Apollos. He is survived by his daughters, Misty Lanahan of Nevada, TX, Jennifer Apollos Gonzalez of Round Rock, TX & Casey Cole of West Columbia, TX; brothers, Jimmy White of Beaverton, AL, Jesse Paul White & Allen Apollos of Sulligent AL; and 5 grandchildren. Mrs. Herring was born Jan. 7, 1921 in Marble Falls, TX to the late Walter & Viola Montgomery Cox, and was a member of Aliceville First United Methodist Church and the Aliceville Garden Club. She was a retired school teacher in the Noxubee Co. School System. She is survived by her husband, Euell Herring of Aliceville; daughter, Betty Owens of Aliceville; son, Don Herring of Murfreesboro, TN; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.


Shelia Smith

Mrs. Tartt was born Aug. 26, 1923 in Monroe Co. to the late Paul & Lula Bell Hall Kyle, and had been employed by Wilson Mfg., Amory Garment Co. & Glenn Mfg. before her retirement. She was a member of Grace Chapel Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, Bernis Tartt; brothers, Ottis Earl, Henry & Johnny Kyle; and sisters, Ruth Maxine Finn & Patsy Wiygul. Roy Honnoll

Mr. Honnoll was born Jan. 30, 1917 in Caledonia to the late Bascom & Mattie Westbrook Honnoll, and was a veteran of WWII, having served in the US Marines. He worked for Bruce Lumber Co. and Westinghouse in CA, and retired from Dowdle Gas of Columbus after 25 years service. He was a member of St. Paul Independent Methodist Church of Caledonia, where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eddie McDaniel Honnoll. He is survived by his son, Steve R. Honnoll of Lincoln, CA; stepdaughters, Opal Holland of Biloxi & Polly Harris of Hattiesburg; sister, Madeline Mashburne of Columbus; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Montgomery; son, Ronnie Pogue; siblings, Susie Holsonback, and Hoyt & Talmadge Tyner; a granddaughter; and a great great grandson. Mrs. Walker was born June 8, 1954 in Union City, TN to the late James Reed & Katheryn Austin Wells, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Amory, and a member of the church choir. She was employed by Bank of Amory, The Gilmore Regional Medical Center as an administrative assistant, and The Gilmore Foundation as the director. She is survived by her husband, Rick Walker of Amory; son, Scott Walker of Amory; daughter, Kim Walker of Amory; brothers, Dave Wells of Olive Branch & Terry Wells of Memphis, TN; and sisters, Glenda Curle of Olive Branch & Linda Stump of Byhalia. James B. Permenter Jr.
Marion-James (Jim) B. Permenter Jr., 74, died May 8 at Anderson Hospital in Meridian. Graveside services will be May 13, 2pm with Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon handling the arrangements. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Cooksville. There will be no visitation. Mr. Permenter was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Noxubee Co. to James B. Permenter & Bessie (Chambers) Permenter, and was a member of the US Army during the Korean War. He had his own Country & Western band-the Peppers- and sang at the Travelers Club in Meridian for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen (John) Fancher of Columbus. He is survived by daughter, Joy (Brian) Coleman of Brandon; 2 stepsons, James & David Wright of Jackson; and sister, Ruth (William) Powell of Ottawa, IL.

She was a member of the New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, where she served as President of the Mother’s Board and the Sewing Circle, and was a member of the Christian Women’s Council. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Winston; son, James Ray Winston; brothers, Herman & Thurman Neal; and sister, Ravin Neal. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Johnson of Sulligent & April Winston of Birmingham; sister, Mattie Hollis of Sulligent; 3 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. She majored in Home Economics with a minor in music, graduating Magna Cum Laude from MSCW in 1934, and was the coordinator for MSCW’s student teachers working in local schools, and was very active with the Westminster House. She is preceded in death by her her husband, Dr. William Hatcher Stepp; and sisters, Elizabeth Amis Thomas & Evelyn Thomas Patterson. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, a charter member and past president of the Earline Robertson Guild, served as Treasurer of the Episcopal Church Women, member of the Columbus Junior Auxiliary, Hugenot Society, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, and served on the board of the S.D. Lee Foundation as Treasurer. She was also a charter member of the Matt Morton Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and served on the Board of the Southern Debutante Assembly in Greenwood for number of years. She retired from McCrary-West Construction in 1990, and was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Quin. She is survived by her daughter, Jennie Quin Szaltis (Ray) of Jacksonville, FL; son, Wade Byers Quin (Janie) of Madison; brother, Dr. Morse Kochititzky of Nashville, TN; sister, Julia Wade Kochititzky Franklin (Ike) of Columbus; and 4 grandchildren.

Reverend W. Murray Bullock, 73, died May 4 at his residence in Tarboro, NC. Services were May 6 at Calvary Episcopal Church in Tarboro, Right Reverend Alfred J. A visitation with family will follow the service. Rev. Bullock was born in Edgecombe Co. to Wiley Braxton & Thelma Newsome Bullock, and received his undergraduate degree from E Carolina University and his master of divinity degree from University of the South in Sewanee. He was employed with the NC Probation Commission, and later as an assistant administrator with Edgecombe General Hospital before being called into God’s ministry. He served churches in LA, VA, NC and MS. He was the rector of St. Paul’s from 1983-1999. Following his retirement, he served as interim priest in several other states. Mr. McBride was born July 16, 1932 in Grenada, proudly served our country in the US Navy for 30 years. After retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer, he became one of the first civilian technical instructors selected for the Naval Technical Training Center (NTTC). He his Associates of Arts degree in General Education from MCC and began working as a letter carrier in Meridian, advancing to Postmaster in Vossburg and later in Little Rock, MS. After retiring from civil service, he served as Chairman of the Lauderdale Co. Tourism Commission, was a member of the E MS Master Gardeners, and member of the Keep America Beautiful Commission. He served as Vice Chairman of Meridian/Lauderdale Co. Crimestoppers and was a member of the Meridian/Lauderdale Public Library Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Task Force Redesign of Meridian Public School District, a member of the Local Task Force Dropout Prevention Plan for Meridian PSD, and a member of the Design Team to Develop a Ninth Grade Academy for Meridian High School. He was a contract instructor at the Naval Technical Training Center in Meridian and a talk show host for WALT-AM radio. He was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church, and was the shelter manager for the American Red Cross at CUMC during Hurricane Katrina. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Y. McBride; mother, Annie Lou Clardy McBride; and brothers, Robert A. McBride & James A. McBride. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Vi; son, Michael McBride (Pam) of Collierville, TN; son, Ben McBride of Memphis, TN; daughter, Lesa ( Darrel) Joyner of Stanton, TN; son, Bill (Amy) Gwinn of Antioch, TN; daughter, Dana Boyken of Meridian; son, Hal Gwinn of Southaven; sister, Sandra Bishop of Maben; sisters-in-law, Frances McBride of Southaven & Louise McBride of St. James, MO; grandchildren Morgan McBride, Jason McBride, Ryan McBride, Eric Joyner, Ian Joyner, Alan Joyner, Ethan Joyner, Caleb Joyner, Jesse Joyner, Sam Joyner, Emma Joyner, Abby Joyner, Clare Joyner, Ashley Torrance, Bradley Gwinn, Austin Gwinn, Kayla Gwinn, Victoria (Tori) Boyken, Kyle Boyken & Joshua Gwinn; and great grandchild, Juliette Torrance. Mrs. Langdon was born July 27, 1926, in Carrollton, AL, to the late Lloyd & Sara Owings Beasley, and was a member of Reform First UM Church. She was a retired school teacher for the Pickens Co. Board of Education and for Pickens Academy, where she taught from 1972 until retiring in 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmette Welch Langdon Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Langdon Mathers of Bethesda, MD & Jane Langdon of Los Angeles, CA; son, Emmette Langdon of Fairhope, AL; sister, Sallye Davie of Birmingham, AL; and 4 grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Bryan Langdon, Trevor Mathers, and Clayton, Gabe, Todd & Ashley Davie.

At the time of his death, he served as an Active Guard and Reserve T-38 Instructor Pilot for the 43rd Flying Training Squadron and as a Continental Airlines Pilot. Betty Cocke Wright died April 8. Services will be held privately. Mrs. Wright was born in Columbus to the late May Richards & Cary Hartwell Cocke. After graduation from Sweet Briar College, she moved to New York, where she worked first for Lord & Taylor and then for Hearst Publications. In St. Louis, she worked as a guide at the Missouri Botanical Garden, and also served as a medical historian at St. Luke's Hospital. At St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Ladue, she was active in the altar guild. In Virginia, she volunteered at Grace Church, Bremo Bluff and was a member of the Fluvanna Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Atwood Wright; daughter; her sisters, Catherine, Clara & May; and brother, Carey. She is survived by a son, a daughter, and a granddaughter.

Ms. Evans was born Nov. 23, 1933, in Starkville to the late Ambus Evans Sr. & Annie Mae Hicks-Evans, and worked in food service and was a Baptist. She is survived by her daughter, Althea Evans-Young of Starkville; sons, Dana & Ambus Evans of St. Louis; brothers, Ambus, James & Jessie Lee Evans of Starkville & Abner Jenkins of Los Angeles; and 5 grandchildren. Co., Shumperts Truck Line, Amwood & Townhouse Penthouse Industries. He had served in the MS Nat'l Guard, and was a member of Grady’s Chapel UM Church & the VFW. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Aldridge of Amory, Barbara Cousar & Becky Tackett of Wren & Marcia Escarcega of Tuscon, AZ; brother, Richard G. Pearson of Wren; and 6 grandchildren. Mr. Hamlin was born Feb. 6, 1934 in West Point to the late Betsy Beatrice Walker & Erle Hamlin, and was a self employed electrician operating Hamlin Electric Service for some 50 plus years. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church and was a veteran of the US Army, serving from 1956-1962. His brother, Judson E. Hamlin, predeceased Mr. Hamlin. He is survived by his wife, Hilda White Hamlin of West Point; daughters, Lisa Perry (Joey) of West Point & Allyson Hamlin of Amory; son, Robert R. Hamlin of Birmingham, AL; and grandson, David Perry. Visitation is April 20 . 4-6pm at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen, and will continue at the funeral home from 12:30 until service time April 21. Mrs. Drake was born Dec. 1, 1916, in French Camp to the late Clyde Davidson Cartledge & Goldie Mecklin Cartledge, and worked as a RN at the old Aberdeen Hospital, Gilmore Memorial Hospital and Aberdeen-Monroe Co. Hospital. She was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, William Ernest Drake, Sr.; sister, Olene C. Hull; and brothers, Remer Winfrey, Jamey Mecklin, Samuel Reginald & Clyde David Cartledge. She is survived by her son, William E. Drake, Jr., of Aberdeen; sister, Goldie Stotts of Tunica; 4 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Pallberaers will be William E. III, David & James Drake, Russell & Stanley Ostrowski, Bobby Camp & Danny Richard Taylor.


Kenneth Gordon

Martha Hood

Mrs. Hood was born April 8, 1927, in Clarksdale to the late Ruby Haimes Shotwell & Joel Shotwell, and worked as a bookkeeper for Miller Brothers Dairy. She later established Mar-Lyn Ceramics, which she operated for over 30 years, and was a lifelong member of First Christian Church. She is survived by her husband, Emmett H. Hood of West Point; daughters, Dianne Hood Johnson of Senatobia, Susan Hood DiBona of Treasure Island, FL, Marcie Hood Rackley of Starkville, Lynne Hood Shope of West Point & Ruby Hood Medlin of Ridgeland; sisters, Joeanne Hawkins of Tuscon, AZ & Gwen Stroud of Hernando; 9 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Chris Jones, Travis & Tyler Shope, Tom Randall, Alan Walker, Marc Steward, Adam Wright, and Michael & Mitchell Medlin.


Frankie “Bo Hog” Jones

Visitation is April 20, 1-3pm at Lee-Sykes Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus. Mr. Jones was born Feb. 29, 1929, in Noxubee Co. to the late Willie & Mariah Stewart Jones, and was a machine operator. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Willie, Henry & Lack Jones. He is survived by his son, Dennis Stevenson of Tuscaloosa, AL; step-sons, Charlie & Jimmy Earl Conner and Willie James Morant o St. Louis; sister, Mary Bell Gilkey of Macon; brother, Cleveland Jones of Detroit; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wives, Lillian McDaniel, Eula J. McDaniel & Merle Oswalt McDaniel; and brother, Hillary McDaniel. He is survived by daughters, Wanda Mitchell & Kathie Widener of Tuscaloosa, AL; 2 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Mitchell was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Monroe Co. to the late Redmon & Essie Dickson Mitchell, and was a guidance counselor at Hatley High School until his retirement. He previously worked for Verona Elementary School, MS Employment Service, State Dept. of Education Food Service in Jackson, and ICC in Tupelo. He was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brother, Garlon Mitchell; and sister, Katherine Rankin. He is survived by his wife, Penny Knight Mitchell of Amory; sons, Robert Mitchell of Amory & Sam Mitchell of Hatley; daughters, Debbie Tubb & Susan Stegall of Amory; brother, Sammy Mitchell of Amory; 8 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Allan Rankin, Jason Tubb, Trevor Stegall, Shannon King, David & Bobby Keith Mitchell, John Phillips & Stan Reed.


Glenis Sizemore
West Point-Glenis Sizemore, 97, died April 18 at her residence. Services will be April 20, 3pm at the Robinson Funeral Home Chapel in West Point, Rev. Dale Funderburg officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home for one hour prior to the service. Ms. Sizemore was born March 8, 1911, in Alabama, and was a member of First Baptist Church. She worked as a RN for 58 years, and at her retirement in 1993, she was the oldest practicing R.N. in the state. She is survived by her brother, John Sizemore of Memphis. Pallbearers will be R.B. Davis, Sonny Sizemore, Patrick & Joseph Cooper, Bill Cox, and Mike, Paul, Jason & Barry Bryan.


Jeanette Smothers
