At Coast Episcopal Lower School, we believe that education should reach outside the walls of the classroom and beyond the boundaries of textbooks, written assignments, and tests. Teachers at the Lower School encourage students to stretch their minds and imaginations, not only in the regular classroom setting, but also with cross-curricular field trips and special events, such as our fifth grade expedition to the Appalachian Trail, literary and art workshops and the annual Multicultural Fair.

Kindergarten at the Lower School provides a play-oriented, family-like environment that supports children making the transition to a longer, more structured school day. Kindergarteners are allowed to nap, and they receive extra attention, thanks to our low teacher-student ratio. These, our youngest lower school students, also enjoy a special “Big Brother/Big Sister” relationship with the fifth graders. Our oldest lower school students read to their special partners and regularly attend functions with them, thereby stimulating friendship and understanding between them.

In grades one through five, children enter into a structured classroom curriculum. The four major academic subjects—mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies—are taught within the student’s primary classroom. Students visit other teachers for instruction in physical education, Spanish, visual arts, drama, computer, music, library skills, and religion.

Boundless curiosity and energy envelop Coast Episcopal Lower School on a daily basis. Much of the spark is kindled in daily morning chapel, where students attend a service with their lower grade partners. Singing the school song and national anthem, praying the school prayer, and listening to the joys and concerns of fellow students reminds Coast Episcopal students of a greater purpose and fills them with the spirit to meet the exciting opportunities of the day ahead.
