While on the TVCC Oceanography fieldtrip we stayed at the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center Housing units. The Winton housing units were great furnished apartments that had a living room, study area, fully-equipped kitchen with a dining area, bathroom, shower area and a sleeping area with four bunk beds and storage for clothes. There is also a Bunkhouse that has four large rooms that each sleep eight in bunk beds with a bathroom.
The campus also has a Dining Hall with two kitchens and a TV lounge with cable TV that has nice leather couches. Outside are a volleyball court and a basketball hoop for great group activities when you just can't find anything else to do at the coast.
While on the fieldtrip the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center took the group on an estuary investigation of Yaquina Bay during low tide. During the investigation students found Ghost Shrimp, Sand Shrimp, Clams, Sea Stars, Mud Eels, baby Crabs and a variety of other sea life living in the estuary. The estuary also has many different plants that contributes to the biodiversity of the the estuary. These plants include Slab Grass, Eel Grass, Pitch Pine, Microalgea and many others that all provide food for animals that live on plant life in the estuary.

The Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center also took the group to South Beach to do a sandy beach investigation. The students were sent out to investigate with nets and shovels to find animals that live on the beach and in the sand. Students found Sand Shrimp, Blood Worms, Razor Clams, Beach Hoppers, Mysids, Velella velella which is a jellyfish called By-the-wind-sail and others that live in the upper zone.
After the sandy beach investigation we had a chance to visit the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center Visitor Center. The center offers videos, hands-on activities, sea creatures and a staff that will explain everything you want to know about the exhibits.

While staying at the Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center two research vessels were in port. One of these research vessels is called the Wecoma that is operated by Oregon State University and owned by US National Science Foundation and is in port most of the time. Along with the Wecoma was another research vessel called the Point Sur. It is operated by Moss Landing Marine Laboratory and is also owned by US National Science Foundation. I had the chance to board this vessel and talk with Chief Engineer Tom Martin.

I am writing an essay on my tour of the Point Sur but it's not done yet. Please check back if you would like to learn more about the Point Sur.
