Valentine Bender
Valentine married Christina Boschee in Kassel, South Russia. They had 16 children. Valentine was forced to serve 5 years in the Russian army. While he was in the army, a Russian neighbor killed his father, Johann, in a dispute over a cow that got out of the Bender's pen. Valentine was allowed to come home on leave, and wept all night on his father's casket. It is believed that he then went AWOL and took Christina, Justina, Fred, and Lydia to America. In
1892 they settled in Hosmer, SD where most of the children were born. In the Spring of 1908 the family moved to Venturia, ND where Valentine bought 3 quarters of land in Sections 26 and 27 of Township 130, Range 72, NW of Venturia. In 1919 they moved to Lehr, where Valentine died in 1924. He is buried in the Lehr city cemetery. |
