She ones she knew were Ada, Fred, Annie, Charlie, Alice, Kate, Nell, Sidney Gordon, William, John (real name Harry), Edward (also known as Luke), Arthur, Margaret Victoria, Gertrude Jessie, Dorothy Winspear, and Alfred. In 1935 John and Alice Damp, parents of 23 [actually 22, as was discovered later] children, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Twelve of the 16 living children were present. "The celebration was held in Moon Grove, North Park, [Pittsburgh], because the [Damp] home at 418 Lorenz Ave., Elliott, would not accommodate the crowd of well-wishers. In addition to the sons and daughters, 36 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren were to attend. The [Damps] were married in Isle of Wight in 1875. They went to London [which Dorothy Ebel says is incorrect] , where Mr. [Damp] became coachman to one of Queen Victoria's ladies in waiting. Later he took care of the saddle horses for the royal family." He came to America, and Pittsburgh, in 1907. He got a job driving a dray and sent for his wife. She gathered together her 15 children and took a boat for New York. The crossing took a week and was a difficult time for Mrs. [Damp]. Looking after 15 children, several mere babies, was a distracting job at home, but on a steamboat crossing the Atlantic Ocean it was much worse. It was worthwhile, though, Mrs. [Damp] told her numerous descendants today. Although never wealthy, the [Damps] prospered in Pittsburgh and were happy. Seven of the 23 children that were born to them have died. Four are at too great a distance to attend today's celebration. John [Damp] Jr. of New York sent his mother $60 as a sixtieth anniversary present." -- 1935 newspaper

In 1938 John and Alice Damp celebrated their 63th wedding anniversary. Each was 80 years old. Married June 27, 1875, in England, when both were 17 years old, and moved to America thirty years ago [which would have been 1908]. Mr. Damp was a coach driver in England. Mrs. Damp apologized that Mr. Damp used a cane; he fell and hurt his leg, and did not want to see a doctor. Mrs. Damp works every day in the garden and walk often to the movies. Fourteen children (6 sons and 8 daughters) still living. Sixteen were brought over from England when they immigrated. -- 1938 newspaper

In 1941 John and Alice Damp celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. John Damp and Alice Whittingstall were married in a little church on the Isle of Wight on Sunday morning, June 1875. [Since the date of the paper was June 27, 1941, and it said 66 years ago today, thus they were married on June 25, 1875.] Both 17, the couple rode across the English countryside in John's horse cart. In a vine-covered church overlooking the Channel at Sandown, they became man and wife and then rode home to tell their parents. They now live at 414 Lorenz Avenue in Elliott. Both are 83 years old. "Many persons are astonished at such a large family, but John and I have been delighted," Mrs. Damp said. Seven sons and seven daughters attended. They had 23 children, brought 16 with them to America 35 year ago [1907], and two have died since they have lived in Pittsburgh. -- 1941 newspaper

After Queen Victoria died, John Damp, who had been a coachman for her ladies in waiting, came to America with his four oldest boys and with Ada Damp's husband [George Warren]. John Damp and the boys worked and then sent Alice Whittingstall money to come to America first class. Since Alice would not leave Ada, her oldest daughter, and her grandchildren, they ALL came first class. They landed at Ellis Island, and the inspector got so interested in Mrs. Damp and all the children and grandchildren that Margaret Victoria, one of the younger Damp children, entered the U.S. with scarlet fever. John and Elizabeth [Ada] Damp had 23 children. Dorothy Myers used to visit them when John and Elizabeth [Ada] lived with one of their kids in Elliott, PA, near Ingemar, south of Pittsburgh, PA. Ada was the oldest of 23. -- Jim & Dot Miller

May Warren married Henry Frey. Henry's sister Ann married Sidney Damp. After May Warren died, Henry and his young son, Henry Jr., moved in with his sister Ann [Damp] and her husband Sidney Damp in Elliott, PA. This household also included John Damp and his wife Alice Whittingstall. It was quite the household. In the summer, though, it was much easier, as John and Alice would travel by train to visit Charles Damp on Long Island, Alice Damp Tingley in CT, and Fred Damp in MA. Gloria Warren recalls that John Damp and his wife were very short, maybe only about five feet tall. One day when Gloria went over to Aunt Ann [Frey, nee Damp] or Uncle Sid [Damp]'s place, where John and his wife were living at the time, John and his wife were sitting on the couch holding hands. Alice had a doll for Gloria, which was a black doll. Black dolls were rare at that time. Alice asked what she was going to name it, and Gloria said Rosie Damp. -- Gloria Warren

For a long time, every summer, in order to give Sidney and Ann Damp relief, John Damp and his wife would be put on a train to New York to visit Charlie Damp, John and Alice's son. Then, after that, they would go to Connecticut to the home of Alice Damp and her husband, George Tingley. Then, they would go to Fred Damp's place in Massachusetts for a while also, before finally coming back to Pittsburgh. They would be gone for most of June, July and August. Gloria Warren says the name may have been Woodingstahl. One newspaper article in 1941 says is was Whittingstall. So also do most other sources, and so the latter is probably correct. -- Gloria Warren.

Some time after 1907, after her husband, John Damp, had come to America and Pittsburgh, his wife gathered her 15 children that she had at the time and took a boat from England to New York. "The crossing took a week and was a difficult time for Mrs. [Damp]." -- 1935 newspaper.

Alice Whittingstall and her 15 children came over from Portsmith, England, on the same ship that Ada Ena Damp, came over with her first six or seven children. According to Ellis Island Records, Alice Louisa Damp [nee Whetingstall], whose ethnicity was English, and who was female and married, left Southampton, Southamptonshire, England, UK, on the ship "New York," and arrived October 4, 1908, aged 50. Also on this ship were her children, Arthur J. Damp, age 26, Henry Ernest Damp, age 17, Kathleen Nora Damp, age 15, Gertrude J. Damp, age 12, Maggie V. Damp, age 10, Sydney G. Damp, age 8, Dorothy Wa. Damp, age 6, and Alfred T. Damp, age 5. Also on the ship were her married daughter, Ada Warren, age 33, and Ada's daughter Florence Warren, age 7. -- Ellis Island Records.

Margaret Victoria Damp, Charlie's sister, was sent at age 13 by Alice Whittingstall, their mother, to take care of Charlie's three children after his wife [Sophia] died. When Charles remarried, he wanted Victoria to stay, but she refused.
