THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GEODESIC DOME
At this time on Earth, we have found that our resources are finite while our ability to reproduce seems infinite. Are we as a species doomed due to a collision course of need and availability ? Some people think we are, as described in books such as "The Population Bomb". Another school of thought proposes that we can engineer ourselves out of this predicament by doing more and more with less and less. It is their contention that this is an evolutionary trend and that working with this trend, we as a species, have a glowing future, in which all have what we need to grow and flourish. R. Buckminster Fullerwas one of the most vocal exponents of the latter positive approach. The result of this outlook and his tremendous energy and perseverance was a collection of invention including (most famously) the geodesic dome. The Geodesic Dome encloses a greater volume of space with the less material than any other type of structure. It is inherently stabile due to its triangulated-geodesic network of members. It is readily mass-producible, modular, transportable and quickly erectable. The geodesic dome offers the potential to enclose cities under one "clear-span" environmental control-enclosure; harvesting for its inhabitants more energy than it uses . It is the potential to house all of humanity by giving them a simple, yet effective technological artifact that makes the geodesic dome so important. Doing more with less for all.
