UNITED WAY OF ADAIR COUNTY
CODE OF ETHICS
Introduction
The United Way of Adair County shall strive to improve the quality of life in our community. In making the choice to affiliate with the United Way, the employee(s), volunteers, and members of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Adair County shall assume the responsibility to conduct themselves in accordance with the ideals, bylaws and policies set by the organization.
Excellence Statement
The employee(s), volunteers, and board members of the United Way of Adair County encourage integrity by avoiding involvement or condoning activities that may degrade the organization; encourage commitment to quality and timeliness in performing the duties of any office or assigned responsibility; encourage truthfulness in writing or reporting on the business of the United Way of Adair County.
Diversity and Equal Opportunity
The United Way of Adair County is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the principle of diversity. While striving to create an environment conducive to professional standards, employee(s) and volunteers value, champion, and embrace diversity as an integral part of business. Those acting as an agent of the United Way of Adair County shall agree to prohibit unfair or discriminatory practices against any volunteer, employee or person served by the United Way of Adair County, because of age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, familial status or disability.
Accountability
The United Way of Adair County shall be accountable to the citizens of Adair County, its member agencies, individuals and businesses whom contribute to the organization.
Decisions regarding the policies and procedures of the United Way of Adair County, allocations of funds to member agencies, appropriation of grants, and other issues that may be considered in accordance with the bylaws of the United Way of Adair County, shall be made by the Board of Directors during meetings at which a quorum of membership is present.
Expenditures, including but not limited to annual allocation of funds to member agencies, distribution of grants, and office and administrative expenses other than those listed in the annual budget shall be approved by the Board of Directors during meetings at which a quorum of the membership is present.
Responsibility to Volunteers
Volunteers who serve the United Way of Adair County are crucial to its success. In order to assist volunteers to serve effectively and to obtain satisfaction for their services, the United Way of Adair County shall:
- Support volunteers so they can perform to the highest level of their contribution and personal satisfaction.
- Treat all volunteers with fairness, equity and respect, providing appropriate mechanisms for their views and interests to be expressed.
- Involve volunteers at appropriate levels and phases of the decision making process.
- Assist in the development and the understanding of the roles of volunteers and employees respectively; set clear standards of performance for volunteers and appropriately recognize their contribution.
Conflict of Interest
Upon accepting consideration for a position on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Adair County, any conflict of interest which would directly or indirectly benefit the board candidate, their family, or any organization for which they serve, shall be disclosed immediately to the Executive Director. A file shall be maintained by the Executive Director for reference.
Board members shall refrain from voting on any matter if a conflict of interest exists as defined in the Bylaws of the United Way of Adair County. This action shall be recorded in the minutes of the meeting.
Employee(s), volunteers, and board members of the United Way of Adair County shall not solicit or accept any gratuity, gift, or favor, other than promotional gifts of nominal value, while serving the organization. Volunteers and board members shall not use United Way resources for personal gain.
Voluntary Giving
Fund raising shall be conducted in a voluntary manner; coercion creates animosity, hinders communications and understanding and leads to decreased support. The coercion of donors - whether real or implied – is contrary to the operating principles of the United Way of Adair County. Giving is a personal matter and decision; no form of coercion is acceptable.
Confidentiality
Employee(s), volunteers, and board members of the United Way of Adair County shall insure the confidentiality of any privileged or nonpublic information, unless specific permission is granted waiving the confidential nature of the information.
Confidentiality regarding donors or donation amounts shall be limited to those with specific reason to know (i.e. Executive Director, Campaign Drive Chair).
Confidentiality shall be strictly maintained regarding any client referral to a member agency, or any agency’s client information obtained through the course of United Way business.
